South Korea to order 12 MH-60R anti-submarine helicopters

 South Korea plans to buy 12 Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine warfare helicopters, the country’s defense procurement agency announced Dec. 15.

The contract, valued at about $878 million, is expected to be signed by the end of this year, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. The decision is a dramatic win for American firm Lockheed Martin, as the MH-60R had been considered a long shot due to its cost. (Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Lockheed.)

For the second batch of the maritime operational helicopter, or MOH, contract, DAPA intended to sign a direct commercial deal last year with a foreign helicopter maker, with three bidders — Lockheed Martin, Italy’s Leonardo and France’s NHIndustries — showing interest.Leonardo, which had sold eight AW159 Wildcat helicopters to the South Korean Navy under the MOH Batch I program, was seen a sure winner in that competition, as the two other contenders failed to submit their proposals by deadline.

Ultimately, DAPA was about to go with the AW159 on a sole-source supplier basis, but the U.S. government threw a last-minute curveball by offering pricing for the MH-60R through the Pentagon’s Foreign Military Sales program.DAPA accepted the offer and issued a second requirement for proposals in May 2019. The U.S. government opened an MH-60R Foreign Military Sales case in August, pegging the value of the 12-strong helicopter deal around $800 million.

In addition to the helicopters, the deal also is known to include weapons, sonobouys, radars and communication equipment, as well as training and support.A total of 12 Seahawks will be delivered to the South Korean Navy by 2025 in stages. The multimission naval helicopters are expected to be deployed aboard the service’s future surface combatants, namely the KDX-III Batch 2 Aegis destroyers, as well as the FFX Batch III frigates.The 19.76-meter-long and 5.1-meter-high chopper with a maximum cruising speed of 267 kph can handle multiple missions, including operations of warfare, search and rescue, and medical evacuation.

The U.S. Navy is the main operator of the “Romeo” maritime helicopter, with 289 units in its fleet. South Korea has been added to the list of Romeo operating countries that includes Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Australia, India and Greece.

UAE orders two more GlobalEye systems

 The original contract with the United Arab Emirates for GlobalEye was signed in 2015. This contract is an amendment to that signed in 2015.

The work will be carried out in Gothenburg, Linköping, Arboga, Järfälla and Luleå in Sweden and in Centurion, South Africa.The contract was signed by the customer on the 30th of December 2020, hence the order was booked during the fourth quarter 2020.GlobalEye provides simultaneous air, maritime and ground surveillance. It combines sophisticated radar technology with the ultra-long range Global 6000 aircraft from Bombardier.

The Cambodian Army is Still Using ZiS-3 Anti-Tank Artillery

 

Although born in the Second World War, however, the ZiS-3 anti-tank gun is still used by the Cambodian Army in service.

In a recent exercise, the Cambodian Army put 76mm anti-tank artillery and other powerful artillery firepower into practice to fire real bullets.It is worth mentioning that this 76mm ZiS-3 anti-tank gun has been produced by the Soviet Union since World War II. However, in the service of the Cambodian army , these cannons are in good condition, their appearance is very new.According to a report by the International Peace Organization, Cambodian Artillery currently owns about 200 of these ZiS-3 towing cannons. Although no longer able to withstand today's main tanks, but the ZiS-3 is still completely capable of defeating many types of modern armor of the 21st century.

Entered service in the Soviet Red Army in 1942, this ZiS-3 anti-tank cannon was then the main anti-tank weapon of the Soviet infantry during World War II.In total between the time from its inception to the end of production after the end of World War II, the Soviet Union produced 103,000 of these guns and many of them were later shipped by the Soviet Union delivered to many countries around the world.Up to the present time, the power of this 76mm cannon is still enough to serve as support for infantry on the battlefield or attack light armored enemy targets

In addition, during the exercise that just took place, the Cambodian Army also brought the largest caliber cannons that the country owned to fire.These were all 130mm caliber guns of the Soviet Union M-46 type or the Chinese Type 59-1 produced. Both types of artillery are basically the same because the Type 59-1, which is also a Chinese imitation from the M-46.Cambodia currently has 150 130mm Type 59-1 cannon and 200 M-46 type 130mm cannon. It is worth mentioning that the number of Cambodian M-46 guns was transferred by the Soviet Union since 1989.

This 130mm caliber cannon was produced by the Soviet Union in the 50s of the last century and has been used around the world. It could even be considered the most popular 130mm cannon in history.In particular, the most modern type of rocket launchers in Southeast Asia in the hands of the Cambodian army was also revealed during the training session of this force. This is a series of RM-70 rocket launchers manufactured by the Czech Republic, bought by Cambodia in 2012.Basically, the RM-70 series rocket can be considered as an improved BM-21 version with more tight armor and better jet ammunition. In addition, improvements in the design of the RM-70 also allow it to be loaded much faster than normal.

This is likely to be a sign that the first flight of two H135 training helicopters of six that the Royal Thai Air Force has signed a contract for procurement in the amount 1,327,791,100 baht ($ 43,353,707).It is expected that the H135 will be delivered into service at the 202 Squadron, Wing 2, Khok Krathiam, Lopburi Province in the year 2021.
